Someone sent me a product to improve my saxophone playing by self-hypnosis and subliminal audio messages, which you could take as meaning you can learn while you sleep, but I think it's more about changing your attitude about performance than learning technique. In fact I know it's not about learning technique. Maybe it works because I haven't practiced much recently but still get compliments on my playing!

Learn to play the ukulele

The ukulele (also ukelele) is a fun, cheap, sociable instrument that you can practice at home without disturbing the neighbours. .

Ukuleles have 4 strings as opposed to the guitar's 6, making them easier to play chords. The most popular ukulele is the soprano, which is rather small. then there is the 'concert', the tenor and the baritone (in order of size and from higher to lower register).

Ukulele bands are popular and it is not uncommon to see gatherings of dozens of ukulele players making music together. Soprano ukuleles will usually outnumber the others and play the melody while the others have a supporting role.

Of course the "uke" can also be used as a single instrument, for instance to accompany oneself's singing.

A variant of the ukulele is the banjo-ukulele - made famous in the UK by comedian George Formby between 1934 and 1945 with his double-entendre songs. The banjo drum resonator adds volume to the quiet sound of the ukulele and indeed gives it a banjo sound.

Of course one can find electric ukuleles, to compete on stage with electric guitars.
